Why Dog Bean Bags Are the Ultimate Way to Pamper Your Pooch!

Dog bean bags offer unparalleled comfort for your furry friend. From joint relief for senior dogs to reducing anxiety, these cozy pet beds are perfect for pampering your pooch.

Why Dogs Actually Prefer a Bed That Moulds to Them

Put a dog in a room with a flat foam mattress and a pile of blankets and watch what happens. The blankets win almost every time — not because dogs are contrary, but because they're wired to seek surfaces that respond to their weight. A bed that shifts slightly where joints press, holds warmth, and forms a nest shape is closer to how dogs naturally rest than a uniform flat surface.

Bean bag dog beds work on this principle. The EPS bead filling redistributes under pressure rather than compressing flat, so the bed conforms to your dog's specific body shape. For older dogs or large breeds carrying significant weight through their hips and elbows, this makes a real difference. Our guide to bean bag dog beds covers the mechanics in more detail if you want the full picture before buying.

Bean Bag vs Flat Dog Mattress: The Practical Differences

Standard foam dog mattresses compress over time. The filling flattens where your dog sleeps, the cover wears at contact points, and within 12–18 months you're looking at a misshapen pad with a dirty cover. EPS bead filling doesn't behave the same way — the beads redistribute rather than permanently compress, so the bed holds its form considerably longer.

Three other differences matter day-to-day:

  • Pressure distribution — A bean bag moulds around your dog and spreads their weight across a wider surface. For a 35kg Labrador, that means less concentrated pressure on elbows and hips at rest.
  • Indoor/outdoor flexibility — Our dog beds use 320GSM Olefin fabric, the same material as our outdoor bean bags. UV-stable to Grade 7–8, saltwater and chlorine resistant to Grade 5. They handle a verandah, a wet dog, or a muddy backyard without any special treatment.
  • Removable, washable covers — The outer cover zips off completely. Hose it down, hand wash, air dry, zip back on. Anyone who has tried to wash a foam-insert mattress in a standard washing machine knows how much easier this is.

The Three Dog Beds We Make

We stock three styles — they're genuinely different products, not just the same shell in different shapes.

Ultimate Dog Bed — Large

Our most popular dog bed and the one we'd recommend for most large breeds. 320GSM Olefin outer with a separate faux fur inner cover that you can remove for winter warmth or stow away in summer. Both covers zip off independently using YKK locking safety zippers — sewn in without exposed pulls that dogs tend to target first.

Fills with 200L of standard EPS beans (available from Kmart or Target). Flammability tested to AS3744.1-1998. One-year warranty. Ships next day from Sydney.

Best for: Large breeds, outdoor use, dogs that shed heavily.

Noah Round Dog Bed — 120cm

A 120cm round bed in charcoal grey with an embroidered heart paw print. The round shape suits dogs that curl up to sleep, which is most dogs when they're properly settled. The generous diameter gives even a large breed plenty of room to sprawl if they choose to.

Same Olefin and YKK spec as the Ultimate. Fills with 200L EPS.

Best for: Dogs that curl up, living rooms and bedrooms, medium to large breeds.

Raffa Rectangle Dog Bed — 100 × 70cm

The compact option at 100 × 70 × 15cm. Charcoal grey with embroidered paw prints. Fills with 100L EPS — half the volume of the other two, so it's lighter to move and cheaper to fill initially. Useful for secondary sleeping spots around the house.

Best for: Medium breeds, offices and bedrooms, secondary spots.

Sizing by Breed Weight

There's no exact formula, but this is how we'd approach it:

  • Under 15kg (Cavoodle, Beagle, Miniature Schnauzer) — Raffa Rectangle or Noah Round
  • 15–35kg (Border Collie, Kelpie, Labrador) — Noah Round or Ultimate Large
  • Over 35kg (Great Dane, Rottweiler, Bernese Mountain Dog) — Ultimate Large

If your dog is a sprawler, size up. If they curl tight, the round beds suit them particularly well. Our guide to choosing the right dog bed has a more detailed breakdown if you're between sizes.

What Olefin Fabric Means for Dog Owners

All three beds use Olefin (solution-dyed polypropylene). It's the same fabric used in commercial resort pool furniture — chosen for how it handles UV, moisture, and frequent cleaning rather than how it looks on a product page.

In practical terms:

  • Dog hair doesn't embed in Olefin the way it does in microfibre or velvet. A firm brush or lint roller handles most of it.
  • The fabric doesn't retain odour the way foam inserts typically do.
  • Mud, drool, and general dog mess hoses off without leaving a stain.
  • If the bed gets wet — from rain, a swim, or a dog that hasn't dried off — the outer cover dries quickly and the filling doesn't absorb moisture.

It's also worth knowing what Olefin is not: it's not fully chew-proof, and it's not a delicate fabric that needs careful handling. If you've had dogs that destroy beds, see our post on how to stop dogs chewing their beds before you buy any bed.

Is a Bean Bag Bed Right for a Senior Dog?

For an older dog who can still get up and down reasonably well, a bean bag bed works well. The conforming fill reduces pressure on arthritic joints, the low profile is easy to step onto, and the EPS fill retains warmth on cold mornings — which matters more for senior dogs than most owners realise.

For a dog with very limited mobility who genuinely struggles to rise from floor level, a raised orthopaedic bed is likely the better choice. Bean bags sit on the floor. If your vet has recommended elevated sleeping to help your dog stand more easily, that advice should take precedence over any bed design.

If joint health is the primary reason you're looking, our post on the best dog beds for arthritis covers what to look for in more detail, and our dog bed guide for senior pets looks at the wider comfort picture.

A Note on Filling

The filling is not included with the bed — you buy the cover and liner, then fill it yourself with standard EPS beans. The Ultimate and Noah take 200L; the Raffa takes 100L. EPS beans are available from Kmart, Target, and Big W.

This adds one step to setup but gives you control over density. Some owners prefer a firmer fill for older dogs with joint problems; others go softer for younger, more active dogs. If you've never filled a bean bag before, our 5-minute filling guide makes it straightforward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are bean bag beds good for dogs with joint problems?

Generally yes, provided your dog can comfortably get up and down from floor level. The conforming fill distributes weight evenly and reduces pressure on joints compared to flat foam mattresses. For dogs with severe mobility issues, speak to your vet about whether a raised bed is more appropriate.

Can I use the dog bed outside?

Yes. All three beds use outdoor-grade Olefin fabric with Grade 7–8 UV fastness and Grade 5 resistance to salt and chlorinated water. They're suitable for covered outdoor areas and patios. Avoid leaving them in direct rain for extended periods without the chance to dry out.

Is the filling safe if my dog chews through the cover?

EPS beads are non-toxic, but ingesting them is not safe for any dog. If your dog is a persistent chewer, supervise them initially and see our guide on what happens if a dog eats styrofoam. The YKK locking zippers reduce the risk of a dog accessing the inner liner, but no bed is indestructible against a determined chewer.

How do I clean the cover?

Unzip the outer cover, hose it down or hand wash with mild detergent, and air dry. Do not tumble dry. The inner liner can be spot-cleaned if needed. Replacement covers are available if the outer becomes damaged.
