Pure white, premium-quality shredded foam for a firmer, fuller sit than polystyrene beads. It holds its shape longer, doesn't rustle the way beads do, and moulds around you rather than sliding out from under you — so it suits lounge chairs, reading spots and anywhere the bag stays put and gets used daily.

Foam or EPS beads?

• Shredded foam — firmer, plusher, quieter, keeps its shape longer. Best for indoor and structured seating.
• EPS polystyrene beads — the classic lightweight bean bag feel, and the buoyant, quick-drying choice for pool and wet outdoor use.

Keep foam for indoors. It soaks up water and turns heavy, so pool bean bags and anything left out in the weather want EPS beads instead.

How much do you need?

• 96cm bean bags: about 300 litres
• 112cm bean bags: about 500 litres
• Most adult sizes: 200–500 litres
• Kids' bean bags: 100–200 litres

A note on freight

Filling weighs almost nothing but takes up a lot of room, and couriers charge for the space a box takes up rather than what it weighs. That makes freight on any filling expensive. Shredded foam is also much harder to find over the counter than EPS beads — if you do have a local supplier, it's worth comparing before you order.

Filling tips

• Fill the inner liner to about two-thirds — an overfilled bag sits hard and loses its shape.
• Two people makes it easy: one holds the liner open, one pours.
• Work in a dry room and keep the filling dry; damp foam stays damp.
• Keep filling away from small children and pets, and zip the liner closed as you go.
