how do you decorate a guest bedroomWhen the time comes to decorate a guest bedroom, you want to create a space that people visiting your home are going to feel comfortable in. To do this, you’re going to have to sit down and think about what kind of vibe you want to give; else you’re going to end up with something that isn’t what you wanted. It doesn’t have to be a tough thing to do, and in fact, it can even be quite fun as long as you get into the spirit of things. Also if you’re struggling right now, we bet that your guest room is going to look stunning by the time you’re finished.

But, if you don’t know where to get started, then you have come to the right place. In this article, we’re going to be looking at some of the ways that you can decorate a guest bedroom and make it look fantastic. Keep reading down below if you want to find out more.

Decorate A Guest Room Using Neutral Colours

The first thing that we are going to suggest is that you start by using neutral colours. As you don’t know who is going to be staying in the room at any given time, the most comfortable option for you is to use simple colours that cater to everyone. For example, black, white, grey, soft browns and colours like this are the kind of direction you should be heading in. We don’t recommend painting the whole room black, though, as this is going to give a completely different vibe to the one that you are going for. If you can, try to make the room stand out, while giving off a friendly vibe that invites people in, and says that they are more than welcome in your home.

Get A Comfortable Bed

Something else that you are going to have to think about is getting a comfortable bed. It is going to be no use buying a bed and mattress that feels as though you are sleeping on a plank of wood. Your guests aren’t going to be comfortable, and nobody is going to want to stay in your home more than once, which will then negate the point of you having a guest room. What you’re going to want to do is put the same level of research into buying this bed as you did the one you sleep in. The only way to be sure that it’s a good quality bed that people are going to be comfortable in is to test it out for yourself and see if you would sleep in it.

You can’t expect your guests to sleep somewhere that you wouldn’t sleep yourself as this is unreasonable. You also wouldn’t want to go to someone’s home and sleep on something that felt like solid wood, so you can’t allow your guests to either. Their stay needs to be as comfortable as possible, and this is one of the most important steps you need to take to make this happen.

The Bedding Needs To Be Right

You also need to think about the bedding that you are giving them. Instead of just putting the standard duvet and pillows on the bed, you want to add something a little extra. Cushions are a great touch to allow for extra comfort should your guest require them. You never know what they are used to sleeping on at home, and while people don’t usually sleep in cushions, they do make excellent decorations on the bed throughout the day.

You’re going to need to add some throws and blankets as well, as this looks fabulous, and keeps everyone warm in the colder seasons. The last thing that you need is your guests being cold in their room at night and having to huddle under the duvet, wondering if they can ask you for an extra blanket or if this would come across as rude. Another thing that you should do is have a folded blanket or two under the bed, or next to it, just in case they need them.

Nobody Wants Clutter

Most people don’t like clutter in their rooms as it doesn’t allow for people to move around the space without tripping on something. For that reason, you’ve got to make sure that your guest room is not filled with unnecessary items at every turn. Your guests want to be able to move around when they are getting ready or when they turn the light off to get into bed at night time. This is better than the alternative of hearing a loud thump at night time where they have fallen because you didn’t take enough care when it came time to decorate a guest bedroom.

Make the most of the space you have, while giving enough freedom that your guests aren’t limited to the only place they are able to walk, being a small strip where they can fit one foot behind the other at all times.

Do Something A Little Different

Something that you need to consider is doing something a little different when you are going to decorate a guest bedroom. Think of all the guest rooms that you have stayed in over the years, and then think about some of the common things that you see. Obviously, there are things that you’ve got to have, such as a bed, curtains, perhaps a bedside table, a wardrobe and so on, but what about those extra touches? Your guest bedroom should stand out from the norm, and you’ve got to figure out a way to do this.

Making your guest room stand out might be easier than you think. For example, adding bean bags is a fun way to incorporate seating into the room, and yet it’s a fun flashback to when you were younger. Or, you could simply add some art to the room. Sometimes you see this in guest rooms anyway, but you can make it a little different by adding pictures with plenty of colours. You will often find that people who are decorating a guest bedroom don’t like to put too many colours in, but when it comes to a picture, there is nothing wrong with this.

Don’t Be Afraid To Make It A Twin

One thing that we think you should certainly think about is making it a twin room. So, instead of just having one bed, you put two single beds in so that you can have guests over even if they are not a couple. Some people don’t like to share a bed anyway, so this could end up working in your favour no matter what. One of the best things about a twin room is that you can make it symmetrical. This is an excellent design choice and one that a lot of people appreciate. It looks fantastic and allows for each person in the room to have their own space while keeping the room looking beautiful.

Make It Feel Homely

Your end goal here should be to make the guest room feel as homely as possible. Your guests should always feel welcome in your home, and the design is going to have a lot of impact on how they feel. For example, if you don’t bother to try to make the room feel as though it is part of a home, then it isn’t going to have a nice feel to it. To make a room homely, you don’t want to have plain white walls and plain white furniture because this will end up feeling like a hospital more than anything else.

We talked above about neutral colours and white is one of them, but you can use it to create a homely effect by coupling it with other, warmer tones and the use of furniture. When you decorate a guest bedroom, it should end up feeling like a small home on its own, obviously without the kitchen and other elements. If it doesn’t, then you’re going to have to rethink your design choices.

Create A Relaxing Environment

As well as creating a room that feels like a home, it needs to be relaxing. When it comes to the end of the day, and everyone heads off to bed, you should all be able to settle and have a relaxing night of sleep. However, if the guest room doesn’t give off a relaxing feeling, this is going to be difficult. For example, some people put dolls in their guest rooms, and yet for others, this is a very creepy thing as it feels like they are looking at you while you’re in the room. The problem with this is that your guests are always going to be on edge if they don’t like the dolls, and yet they won’t feel able to tell you about it.

You’ve got to make sure you are considering other people when you are designing and not just what you think looks good. It’s a tough job, but it doesn’t have to be a battle to do as long as you think outside of your own little design bubble. You can even hire some help to get the room in the best condition if you want.

When you think of relaxing, you probably think of candles, furniture, closet space, and a few other things. Well, your guest room needs to have all of these to ensure the most relaxing environment possible. We mentioned bean bags above, and these are a great way to bring a relaxing tone to the room if this is something that you interests you.

Decorate A Guest Room With Fresh Flowers

Fresh flowers always make for a better room but check that your guests aren’t allergic before they get to your home to avoid any issues. They bring about an outdoors feel to them, while also looking beautiful and brightening up the entire space.

Let The Sunshine In

Don’t block out the light. One thing that you definitely don’t want to do is block out the sunshine, except for at night time when people are trying to sleep. For this reason, you need to have good quality curtains for when it comes to bedtime, but you’ve also got to make sure there are hooks to tie them back during the day. You want as much natural light to come into the room as you can, for a number of reasons. The first is that natural light makes space look brighter. The brighter things are, the more happy people tend to feel about them as this is just a reaction that happens in the brain to bright things.

As well as this, if you allow the natural light into the room, you aren’t going to have that many sources of artificial light. What this means is that you’re going to need fewer lamps to keep the room lit up.

You could even think about installing a skylight above the room for maximum effect. This is completely optional, especially if there isn’t one there because it can be quite a bit of work, but it’s going to give the room that extra something that not many other people have. If you do decide to incorporate this, then ensure you buy something that can cover it if necessary.

Don’t Cram Things In

Finally, you don’t want to cram items into the room just for the sake of them being there. This is not necessary, and it makes the room look as though you are using it as a storage space rather than a guest room. This is not something that you want to portray to your guests, so we highly recommend that you keep it as minimal as possible, while still making it cosy and including spaces for them to sit down and work at if they need to.

We hope that you have found this article helpful, and now have a few ideas about how you decorate a guest bedroom. Take this advice, and you’re going to have one of the best guest rooms ever, which is going to make everyone want to stay with you!
