Buying a bean bag as an adult is a different decision from buying one for a child. You're thinking about how it fits a room, whether it'll hold up to daily use, which fabric suits your lifestyle, and whether it's actually going to be comfortable for extended sitting rather than just looking good in a photo.
This guide covers the five things that genuinely matter when choosing an adult bean bag — fabric, size and shape, filling, construction quality, and use case — with specific product recommendations from our range where relevant.
1. Fabric first — it determines everything else
Fabric affects how the bean bag feels, how it ages, how easy it is to clean, and whether it's suitable for indoor use, outdoor use, or both. It's the single most important specification and the one most buyers spend the least time on.
The main options in our adult range:
- Velvet — soft, smooth, suits contemporary interiors. Marks easily from prolonged friction but wipes clean well. Purely indoor. The Bella and Teddy Velvet are our velvet options
- Corduroy — ribbed texture, warm to the touch, durable. Holds its appearance well with regular use. Indoor. See the Boston Corduroy and Teddy Corduroy
- Microsuede — a soft, slightly structured feel. Reasonably easy to clean, suits a range of interior styles. Indoor. See the Cocoon
- Denim — casual, durable, and practical. Suits relaxed living rooms and outdoor-adjacent spaces. See the Cuba Denim
- 1680D polyester with PU coating — heavy-duty outdoor fabric. Water-repellent, UV-treated, antimicrobial. Suits patios, decks, and indoor/outdoor use. See the Big Boppa, Cayman, and Merlin
- Olefin — solution-dyed polypropylene used in our premium outdoor range. Grade 7–8 UV fastness, Grade 5 salt and chlorine resistance. The most durable option for sustained outdoor exposure. See the Hayman and Positano

2. Size and shape — match the use, not just the room
Most adult buyers size up from what they initially think they need. A bean bag that looked large on a product page often feels underwhelming in an actual living room. As a general rule: if you're unsure between two sizes, take the larger one.
Beyond diameter, shape matters more for adult use than it does for children:
- Classic round — the standard format. No fixed back or armrests, conforms to whatever position you settle into. Best for relaxed, informal lounging. The Big Boppa (oversized adult) and Bella (velvet indoor) fit this profile
- Structured with back support — a taller back and defined seat. Better for extended sitting and more upright postures. The Big Bob has wide armrests and a tall back; the Big Boss Chair is oversized with similar structure
- Lounger — wide enough to lie on, long enough for full-body use. The Big Boss Lounger and Portofino suit media rooms, outdoor entertaining, and anyone who uses a bean bag more as a daybed than a chair. See our bean bag loungers guide for the full breakdown
- Double — wide enough for two adults. The Cayman and Costa Luxe are built for pairs

3. Filling — what's inside determines long-term comfort
EPS (expanded polystyrene) beads are the standard fill for quality bean bags and the one we use across our range. They shift and conform under pressure, hold warmth, and don't compress permanently the way foam does — which means the bean bag retains its shape over time rather than bottoming out after a few months.
A few practical points about filling:
- Fill is not included with any bean bag in our range. You buy the cover and liner, fill it yourself with standard EPS beans available from Kmart, Target, or Big W
- This gives you control over firmness from the start — firmer if you want more support, softer if you prefer a deeper sink
- EPS fill compresses slightly over time and will need topping up eventually. This is straightforward — see our bean bag refilling guide for how much to add and when
- An inner liner is essential. It contains the fill if the outer cover is unzipped or damaged, and means you can remove the cover for cleaning without spilling beads across the floor. All our bean bags include one
For a comparison of EPS, shredded foam, and alternative fills, see our bean bag filling guide.
4. Construction quality — what separates a bean bag that lasts from one that doesn't
The difference between a quality adult bean bag and a cheap one usually comes down to three things:
- Seam construction — double-stitched and overlocked seams are what you want. Single-stitched seams on a bean bag used daily by adults will eventually give way at stress points
- Zippers — locking safety zippers prevent accidental opening and access to the filling. They also last considerably longer than standard zippers under repeated use. All our bean bags use childproof locking zippers as standard
- Inner liner — a separate inner bag that contains the fill independently of the outer cover. Non-negotiable for long-term use. As above, included with our range
Things to be cautious of when comparing options online: products that describe fabric weight vaguely ("heavy duty" without a denier count), no mention of an inner liner, and zippers described as "durable" rather than locking or childproof.
5. Use case — indoor, outdoor, or both
The final question is where the bean bag will actually live, because that should drive the fabric and construction choice more than anything else.
Primarily indoors — velvet, corduroy, microsuede, and denim all work well. These fabrics aren't designed to handle UV or moisture and will deteriorate if left outside. The Bella, Boston Corduroy, Teddy range, Cuba Denim, and Cocoon all fall into this category.
Indoor/outdoor flexibility — 1680D PU-coated polyester handles both without issue. The Big Boppa, Merlin, Cayman, Big Bob, and Portofino can move between a living room and a covered patio without any special treatment.
Primarily outdoors or high UV exposure — Olefin is the better choice for sustained outdoor use. It's more UV-stable than PU-coated polyester over the long term because the colour and UV resistance are built into the fibre rather than applied as a coating. The Hayman and Positano are our Olefin outdoor options.
Gaming and extended desk use — structured styles with back support (Big Bob, Big Boss Chair) work better than round bags for sessions where you're sitting upright for extended periods. See our gaming bean bags guide for specific recommendations.
Back and posture concerns — bean bags aren't inherently bad for your back, but choice matters. A fully filled, structured bean bag provides more support than a soft, underfilled round bag. See our post on bean bags and back support for practical guidance.

Frequently asked questions
How much filling does an adult bean bag need?
Most adult bean bags take between 200 and 400 litres of EPS beans depending on size and how firm you want it. For an exact figure, use our bean bag filling calculator. Our filling guide has specific quantities by bag size and tips for getting the fill level right first time.
Are bean bags suitable for everyday use by adults?
Yes, provided you choose a quality construction with double-stitched seams and a proper inner liner. A well-made adult bean bag used daily should hold its shape for several years with occasional fill top-ups.
Can I use an indoor bean bag outside occasionally?
For brief outdoor use in dry conditions, most indoor fabrics will be fine. For regular outdoor use or exposure to sun and rain, choose a 1680D or Olefin fabric specifically. Velvet, corduroy, and faux fur will deteriorate quickly under UV and moisture.
Do adult bean bags come filled?
Ours don't — they're sold as covers and liners, and you fill them with standard EPS beans from Kmart, Target, or Big W. This keeps shipping costs manageable and lets you control the firmness level from the start.
