The yellow and white striped bean bags floating in the rooftop pool at Le Méridien Melbourne? Those are ours. The hotel uses our Costa Pool loungers in yellow stripes, embroidered for the hotel, and one of them ended up as the face of a Marriott Bonvoy summer campaign. Here's the bean bag, the pool, and why a stripe works so well on a city rooftop.

Le Méridien Melbourne
Le Méridien Melbourne opened in March 2023 at 20 Bourke Street, on the site of the old Palace Theatre at the top end of the city. It has 235 rooms and suites over 12 storeys, with a mid-century Melbourne look inside. Up on the fifth floor there's an 18-metre pool with views across the city skyline and Parliament House, and an open-air bar on the terrace.
Le Méridien is part of the Marriott group, and the hotel is in the Marriott Bonvoy program.
Featured in the Marriott Bonvoy app
When Marriott Bonvoy ran its summer offer on stays in Australia and New Zealand, the image it led with in the app was a guest on one of our yellow stripe Costa Pool loungers at Le Méridien Melbourne. For a pool bean bag, it's about as good a stage as it gets.

The bean bag: the Costa Pool lounger
The Costa Pool is a lounger made to go in the water as well as beside it. Le Méridien's are in our yellow stripe and embroidered for the hotel. Each one has:
- The size: 120 x 120 x 60 cm when filled, with a raised headrest.
- The fabric: 320 GSM olefin with a TPU coating, suited to salt water, chlorinated and magnesium pools, with a Microban antimicrobial finish against mould and mildew.
- The liners: two inner liners, one for the base and one for the headrest, so the firmness of each can be set separately.
- The fill: about 600 litres of EPS beans. It floats on its fill, so there's no air to lose and nothing to puncture.
- The finish: marine-grade stitching and safety locking zippers.
- The branding: embroidered for the hotel.
Why the yellow stripe works
A rooftop pool in the middle of the city is surrounded by glass, concrete and brick. The yellow and white stripe cuts through all of it. It reads as summer straight away, it looks good from the deck, from the terrace bar and from a camera above the pool, and it's the kind of detail guests photograph. Which is exactly how it ended up in the Bonvoy app.
In the pool and on the deck
The Costa Pool works both ways. Guests lie back on it out on the water, lean on it from the side, or pull it up on the deck to sit in the sun. It suits adults, and families too.

What this job shows
A few things we'd tell any hotel with a pool (our guide to bean bags at hotels and resorts covers the rest of the property):
- Choose a colour the camera loves. A bold stripe makes the pool instantly recognisable, in guests' photos and in your own marketing.
- Brand it subtly. Embroidery puts the hotel's name on the bean bag without turning it into an ad. Kudadoo Maldives does the same with gold-embroidered pool bean bags.
- Use a pool-rated fabric. Chlorine, salt and sun are hard on fabric. Coated olefin is made for it. Here's what to look for in commercial pool loungers.
- Skip the air. A bean-filled lounger has nothing to puncture or deflate, so it's ready every morning. See our guide to non-inflatable pool floats.
- Think in and out of the water. A lounger that works on the deck too earns its place twice over.
