The pool bean bags with the gold manta ray floating in the overwater villas at Kudadoo Maldives Private Island? Those are ours. We've supplied Kudadoo with custom Portsea pool bean bags since 2018, the year the island opened. Each one is made in solution-dyed acrylic with the resort's logo embroidered in gold. Here's what goes into a pool bean bag for a Forbes Five-Star private island, and why we made the choices we did.
Kudadoo Maldives Private Island
Kudadoo Maldives Private Island by Hurawalhi sits in the Lhaviyani Atoll and opened in December 2018. It has 15 Ocean Residences built over the water, each with its own infinity pool and a private butler. The island was designed by Japanese architect Yuji Yamazaki, and the roofs are covered in solar panels that power the resort. Stays are fully inclusive under the island's motto, "Anything, Anytime, Anywhere".
An award-winning island
Recent awards include:
- Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating every year from 2022 to 2026, five years in a row.
- Condé Nast Traveller: named on its 2025 list of the 16 best private island resorts in the world.
- Condé Nast Traveler: named Best All-Inclusive Hotel in 2025.
- Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Best of the Best 2025, which puts it in the top 1% of hotels worldwide.
Those awards are Kudadoo's, not ours. What we can say is that a property held to that standard has kept our bean bags in its villas since opening.
The bean bag: a custom Portsea
Kudadoo's bean bags are built on our Portsea pool float, made to the resort's spec. Each one has:
- The design: no air. The Portsea floats on its bean fill, so there's nothing to pump up, nothing to puncture and nothing to find deflated in the morning. Water drains straight through and it dries fast.
- The fabric: solution-dyed acrylic, chosen to stand up to constant sun.
- The branding: the Kudadoo manta ray and "Kudadoo Maldives Private Island by Hurawalhi", embroidered in gold thread.
- The tether: an eyelet on the corner, so it can be tied off and stays where it's left.
- The label: our woven Bean Bags R Us label on the side seam.
Why solution-dyed acrylic
The Maldives sits just north of the equator, so a villa pool gets strong sun all day, all year. That's hard on fabric, and dark fabric shows fading faster than anything.
Most fabrics are dyed after they're woven, so the colour sits on the surface and fades as the sun breaks it down. Solution-dyed acrylic is coloured before the fibre is spun, so the colour runs right through every thread. That's why we use it here. Our retail Portsea is made in 320 GSM olefin, which suits most home pools. For a resort pool in full equatorial sun every day, we went to acrylic.
Why gold embroidery, not print
Embroidery is stitched into the fabric, not printed on top of it. Gold thread against the dark acrylic matches the way Kudadoo presents its own logo, and it makes the bean bag look like part of the villa rather than promotional merchandise. For a resort that's on every guest's camera roll, that matters.
How Kudadoo uses them
The bean bags live in the villa pools. Guests lie on them out over the water, lounge with a drink, or float next to one of the island's floating breakfast trays. Because they work on the water and on the deck, one bean bag covers both jobs.
Eight years on
Kudadoo opened in December 2018 and we've supplied them ever since, with orders still going out in 2026. We ship worldwide, and resort orders like this one go straight to the Maldives. Another Maldives resort, Velassaru Maldives, has been ordering from us since 2017 for its beach cinema.
What this job shows
A few things we'd tell any resort fitting out a pool (our guide to bean bags at hotels and resorts covers the rest of the property):
- Pick the fabric for the sun you actually get. A home pool and an equatorial resort pool aren't the same job. Solution-dyed acrylic holds its colour where the sun never lets up.
- Embroider for the long haul. A stitched logo is part of the fabric and reads as part of the fit-out. Le Méridien Melbourne took the same approach with its rooftop pool.
- Skip the air. A bean-filled float has nothing to puncture, so it's still floating years later. See our guide to non-inflatable pool floats.
- Keep the spec consistent. Same fabric, same thread, same placement on every order, so a new bean bag matches the ones already in the pool.
- Look after them. A rinse after use and somewhere to dry go a long way in salt air. Our tropical and coastal care guide has the routine.
