The blue bean bags under the blue umbrellas on Ocean Park Beach in San Juan? Those are ours. Numero Uno Beach House has been seating guests on our bean bags since 2019, and the beach in front of the bar now runs on six of our designs. Here's what they use, where each one fits, and what a beachfront bar can learn from it.
Numero Uno Beach House
Numero Uno is a boutique beach house at 1 Santa Ana Street in Ocean Park, San Juan, right on Ocean Park Beach. It has ocean-view and garden-view rooms and beach apartments, and its Beach House Bar & Bistro serves Caribbean, local and Latin American food from breakfast through dinner, plus brunch and cocktail hour. Out the front, big blue umbrellas line the sand, and Ocean Park's kiteboarders put on a show offshore.
Numero Uno is also a 2025 Evergreen Award winner.
Six designs on one beach
Numero Uno doesn't use one bean bag for everything. Over the years it has built up a mix, so there's a seat for every kind of guest: people eating, people drinking, people reading and people who want to lie flat. They use:
- Merlin: a high-back chair, 80 x 100 x 90 cm filled, with head, neck and lower-back support. The one to sit up in with a drink.
- Media Lounge: a lounger with an angled backrest, 120 x 66 x 60 cm filled. Long enough to stretch out in for an afternoon.
- Freaky Cousin: a compact chair, 77 x 95 x 65 cm filled. Easy to move around and good for filling gaps between the bigger seats.
- Positano: a round teardrop in olefin, 96 or 120 cm across. It brings a different shape to the mix.
- Hayman: our largest, at 180 x 140 x 30 cm filled. A lounger, a chair or a bed, and big enough for two.
- Round Outdoor Ottomans: 75 cm across and 35 cm high. A footrest, an extra seat, or a low spot to put things down.
Built for the beach
Most of the range Numero Uno uses is made from 1680D PU-coated polyester, and the Positano is made from olefin. Both suit a beach bar:
- Water resistant: spilled drinks, wet swimmers and the odd shower don't soak in.
- Made for sun: UV-resistant fabrics, made to hold their colour outdoors.
- Sand friendly: no legs or frames to sink in, and the covers brush or hose clean.
- Inner liners: the beans stay in a separate liner, so a cover can come off for washing without beans going everywhere.
- Childproof zips: YKK safety locking zippers keep the covers closed.
From brunch to sunset
The bean bags work across the whole day at Numero Uno. Brunch and lunch on the sand, drinks under the umbrellas through the afternoon, then lanterns and the San Juan skyline as the sun goes down. The same seats cover all of it, and guests settle in for longer than they would on a chair.
And it isn't only guests. Four-legged visitors like them too, and we make dog beds as well.
A customer since 2019
Numero Uno first ordered from us in 2019 and has kept adding to the beach since. We ship worldwide, so a beach bar in Puerto Rico can order the same way a cafe in Sydney does. What this job shows
A few things we'd tell any beach bar or beachfront hotel (our guide to bean bags at hotels and resorts covers the rest of the property):
- Mix the shapes. Chairs, loungers, big beds and ottomans suit different guests. A mix fills the beach better than one style.
- Add ottomans. They give guests a footrest, a spare seat or somewhere to put a drink.
- Pick fabric for the conditions. Sun, salt, sand and spills all hit at once on a beach. Outdoor-rated fabric and inner liners make it manageable, and our tropical and coastal care guide covers the routine.
- Use them all day. The same seats work for brunch, an afternoon drink and sunset.
- Keep adding. Bean bags are easy to add to over time, so the setup can grow with the business.
